Holding Forth the Word of Life

BEHOLD THE LAMB OF GOD

John 1:29-34

Jesus is the Living Word, the Light of the world, and the Son of God. John the Baptist pointed all men to the long-awaited Christ (in Greek), or the Messiah (in Hebrew), meaning ‘the Anointed One”.  He is here! Look at Jesus - the sacrificial Lamb of God and Saviour of the world. Turn to Jesus today and every day of your life.

  1. Look at your Sin
    1. Sin is our biggest problem. We were in darkness of sin, having rejected God, fearful of death and judgment (Jn 1:5, 10-11; Rom 3:23, 6:23; Heb 9:27).
    2. Animal sacrifices in the Old Testament could not take away sin but pointed to the sacrifice of the Lamb of God (Heb 10:4, 10).
  2. Look at Jesus
    1. Jesus is the Lamb of God (Jn 1:29, 36), the Messiah-lamb sacrifice in Isaiah 53:7 (Acts 8:32, 35). Jesus is our passover lamb sacrifice (1 Cor 5:7) – recall the passover lamb that saved Israel (Ex 12:1-14). Blood must be shed for cleansing of sin (Heb 9:22).
    2. Jesus’ blood takes away sin (1 Pet 1:18-19; 1 Jn 1:7). The sinless Saviour paid the penalty for our sins by His death (Isa 53:5-6), appeased divine wrath and reconciled us to God (2 Cor 5:21; Rom 3:25). We can now live a righteous life (1 Pet 2:24; 1 Jn 1:9).
  3. Look to Jesus
    1. Look only to Jesus (v.29) cf. Isa 45:22; Jn 3:14-16. Come to Jesus, repent of your sins to be saved (Acts 16:31; Jn 6:37).
    2. Submit to Jesus the Son of God (vv.12, 27). How did John the Baptist know Jesus is the Son of God? - testimony of the Father & Holy Spirit (vv.31-34) cf. Mk 1:10-11. Receive the Holy Spirit (v.33), have daily victory over sin (Rom 8:13).

If you are a child of God, be thankful for the Lamb of God who continues to take away your sin every day. If you have not received Jesus as your Saviour and Lord, come to Him today!
