John 3:1-15

Holding Forth the Word of Life:

The New Birth

Life B-P Church Worship I & II, 11th February 2018

Text: John 3:1-15

  1. Who Needs the New Birth? (vv.1-3)
  • As a Pharisee, Nicodemus would have placed much value on keeping the law and on external forms of piety (cf. Matthew 23:23,24).
  • But he came to Jesus with a sincere desire to learn from Him.
  • Jesus removes any thought of seeing the kingdom of God without the new birth.

  1. What Is the New Birth? (vv.3-10)

  1. Born Anew
  • To be born again is to begin a new life (cf. Rom 6:4; 2 Corinthians 5:17).
  • The old nature is incompatible with God’s kingdom.
  • A superficial renovation will not help (Ezekiel 11:19; 36:26).

B. Born from Above

  • If you are born again it is because God has worked in you (cf. John 1:12,13).
  • But God uses means of grace to accomplish salvation and we are responsible to use it.

C. Born of Water

  • The new birth can only take place by the Word of God (cf. Acts 2:37; 16:14).

D. Born of the Spirit

  • One can tell that the Holy Spirit has been working through the results.
  • The new birth is the change of heart wrought by the Spirit using the Word, which enables the sinner to repent of his sins and believe in Jesus Christ.
  • Nicodemus was apparently born again later on (John 7:50; 19:39).

  1. How is the Glory of Jesus Revealed through the New Birth? (vv.11-15)
  • The only way to believe heavenly things is to be born again (v.12).
  • Some of the heavenly things the new birth enables us to believe:
  1. The Son of Man came down from heaven, and yet He remained in heaven (v.13).
  2. Jesus saves sinners through being lifted up on the cross of Calvary (v.14).
  3. Whosoever believes in Christ will have eternal life (v.15).

Questions for Personal Reflection:

  1. Have you been seeking salvation without being born again?
  2. Do you receive, love and embrace these heavenly things?
  3. How glorious and precious is Christ to you?
