Questions for Discussion:
- What makes us confident in our own righteousness? (Luke 18:9) Have you ever known anyone like this? Have you ever been this way yourself? What causes it? What are the symptoms of this feeling?
- In what ways do 21st Century Christians look down on others? Who are the people we look down on? How does this grieve Jesus’ heart? How does it injure the cause of the church?
- What did the Pharisee’s prayer consist of? What does that tell us about him? (Luke 18:11, 12)
- What did the Publican’s prayer consist of? What do his prayer and his body language tell us about him? (Luke 18:13)
- Should Christians consider themselves righteous people? How can this be consistent with humility? (Luke 18:14)
- In what way (if any) is looking down on a sinner constitute a sin? Does forgiveness from this sin require humbling? What kind of humbling is appropriate? If Jesus were in the confessional speaking to you about this, what “penance” should he prescribe for your sin?

Questions for Discussion:
1. Who are the people you find it most difficult to forgive? Why?
2. In most feuds and quarrels, both parties are to blame and both must seek forgiveness from each other. Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not?
3. When people live in unforgiveness, they become bitter. Yet many continue to serve and come to church. What do you think happens to their service to God if they continue to be bitter? What do you think will happen to the church with bitter people serving in the ministries?
4. Do you know of people who need to be reconciled? Are you responsible to help them?
