GAF Committee with Rev Colin Wong
History
The Golden-Age Fellowship of Life B-P Church was founded eleven years ago in April 2000 by Mrs Seow Chong Pin. Mrs Seow saw the need to cater for the senior members of the church. For many years, the Fellowship had been meeting every quarter at her home on Saturday 4 pm at 7, Lily Avenue. Meetings were conducted in English and Chinese. Thanks be to God, despite her age in the eighties, Mrs Seow is still serving faithfully in the GAF today, an exemplar to the younger members.
As attendance grew, there was a need to set up the GAF as one of the church Fellowship groups.
A committee was set up in October 2007 comprising members from the English and Chinese Services, with Rev Colin Wong as the advisor. Rev Wong has been the strong supporter of GAF since its inception. In 2008, GAF meetings were conducted at the church’s Chinese Service Hall and since 2010 at the Beulah Centre MPH.
Objective
“Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing” (Psalm 92:13-14).
The purpose of the Golden-Age Fellowship is to promote the spiritual growth of its senior members of the church. It also provides a venue for them to come together to share God’s blessings in their lives, strengthen their friendship in the Lord and make new friends. They shall still bring blessings to others.
No Membership Requirement
GAF has no membership requirement, all elderlies of the church are welcome to attend. Regular attendees are from MF, LF, Chinese Service and other Fellowship groups, where they are already affiliated to their own ministry. Nevertheless, GAF is the “Ultimate Fellowship” where every member will eventually reach the Golden Age and can play a more active role in it even though he or she may still retain or be attached to the original ministry.
Younger members of the church are also welcome to join us, a venue to assist and to show care and concern for the elderlies, a way to promote cross-fellowship environment.
The Fellowship Meeting
We thank the Lord for good attendance all these years. We have on average of 55 brethren and friends attending the meeting. We invite our pastors, elders or outside speakers to share the Word of God. Messages are interpreted either in Mandarin or one of the Chinese dialects. There are also testimonies from members to give words of wisdom. Job 12:12 says, “With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding.”
Next GAF meeting will be on 4th June 11, Rev Quek Keng Khwang will be speaking on the topic of “Staying Fresh and Green”. There will also be presentation of 11th anniversary video clips.
Other Activities
The Golden-Age Fellowship has other activities for the elderly:
1. Excursion and Cross-fellowship Initiative
Every August, the Fellowship organizes an excursion/outing for the elderly to visit places of interest like factories, farms and parks. In August 2010, the one day outing to Johore attracted 88 members and friends from both English and Chinese services. Worthy to note was the cross-fellowship effort from the YF, who organized this event for the elderlies.
In August this year, GAF will organize a half day tour to “Breakthrough Missions”, a halfway house for drug addicts, with lunch at the Farm Mart. Due to limited space at the Missions, only 100 seats are available, priority will be given to Life church seniors.
2. Anniversary Thanksgiving Day
GAF celebrated its 11th anniversary on 5 March 2011. More than 160 attended this Thanksgiving service. There were more than 10 senior citizen friends from Bishan who attended this meeting through the introduction of one LFer. Also, a cross-fellowship initiative from LTF with their song item made this thanksgiving service a memorable one. And as always, we have the active participations from the MF, LF and Chinese Service and their choir. There were also heart warming testimonies from bro Chen Foo Yan and sister Tan Bee Choo. Rev Wong shared the importance of being elderly and to finishing well.
Looking Ahead
The Golden Age Fellowship desires to do much more for the elderly in the Church. We encourage many younger members of the church to join or interact with the elderly. They can also learn from the elderly for “Wisdom is with the aged, and understanding in length of days”.
We also wish that the Lord will continue to use our seniors to bear fruits for Him .“They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing.”
