“Thou wilt shew me the path of life:  in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” (Psalm 16:11)

2017 is going to be a significant year as Protestants worldwide celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation Movement.  On 31st October 1517, Martin Luther posted the 95 theses on a church door in the university town of Wittenberg that marked the initiation of the Protestant Reformation.  What is so significant about the Protestant Reformation?  Martin Luther was so awed by the words of Prophet Habakkuk 2:4 that gave him the motivation to post the 95 theses in protest to the dark practices of the church during this epochal time – “Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.”  The five solae of the Protestant Reformation are a foundational set of Biblical principles held by theologians and churchmen to be central to the doctrine of salvation, namely, Sola Scriptura (by scripture alone), Sola Gratia (by grace alone), Sola Fides (by faith alone), Solus Christus (through Christ alone), and Soli Deo Gloria (glory to God alone). “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Eph. 2:8-9)

King David reminds us in Psalm 16:11 that God will show us the path of life ahead.  This is the life of Christian discipleship – the abundant Christian life according to John 10:10. The Christian life is to be lived in full obedience to the Word of God.  Our Lord Jesus Christ’s first commandment to the disciples is given in Matthew 4:19 – “And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”  Our Lord Jesus Christ expects us to first follow Him!  It is in following Him that we learn to live the abundant Christian life.  Eternal life is not life after death.  Eternal life begins when we receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Saviour and Lord!  “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” (John 17:3) Knowing God and accepting our Lord Jesus Christ is the beginning of eternal life.  The secret of victorious Christian living is in abiding in Christ.  Our Lord Jesus Christ told the disciples, “Abide in me, and I in you.  As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.” (John 15:4)

When we abide in our Lord Jesus Christ, we enter into His presence and experience the fullness of joy!  The joy of the Lord is our strength (Nehemiah 8:10).  God not only provides us with instruction to godly living by His words, He also gives us another powerful tool called “prayer”!  Jesus says, “Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.” (John 16:24) And again, “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” (John 15:7) God wants to bless and prosper us spiritually, if only we learn to obey and abide in Him.  Once we enter into His presence by obedience to His words, we receive joy unspeakable to our souls. “Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory.” (1 Pet. 1:8)

The writer of the Book of Hebrews tells us, “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2) As much as we are expected to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17), we are assured that our Lord Jesus Christ is seated at the right hand of the throne of God interceding for us day and night!  Hence, the psalmist declares that “at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore” (Psalm 16:11c) Let us draw near to God always as His redeemed blood-bought children by abiding in Him and obeying His words.  Our Sunday School Staff will sing “Redeemed” as a hymn of consecration this morning.  May the Lord Jesus bless every staff member as we endeavour to stay close to Him by following Jesus Christ; and leading our charges to follow Him through the faithful teaching of His word every Lord’s Day. Amen.

Redeemed—how I love to proclaim it!

Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;

Redeemed through His infinite mercy,

His child, and forever, I am.

            Redeemed, redeemed,

            Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;

            Redeemed, redeemed,

            His child, and forever, I am.

Redeemed and so happy in Jesus,

No language my rapture can tell;

I know that the light of His presence

With me doth continually dwell.

I think of my blessed Redeemer,

I think of Him all the day long;

I sing, for I cannot be silent;

His love is the theme of my song.

I know I shall see in His beauty

The King in whose way I delight;

Who lovingly guardeth my footsteps,

And giveth me songs in the night.

Because Jesus lives,

Verse for the Week

December 17 & 24 - The Day of God

Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? 2 Peter 3:12
