1st Peter 2:9 reads: ‘But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light’. Indeed, as God’s people in the midst of an increasingly sin-filled society and culture, the Lord calls us to be distinct, and to glorify Him through our godly conversation. This clarion call is a familiar one to the YF. Having completed our series on the Sermon on the Mount in 2010, where we learnt how citizens of the kingdom of heaven should live, we proceeded to explore 1st Peter in September 2010, and this will come to a close in April this year. Through messages, bible-studies and workshops, our study of 1st Peter has been a sobering, yet challenging experience for us, as we learned how Christians ought to perceive trials and persecution, and to be joyful in the midst of suffering.
In May 2011, we will proceed to a topical series, titled ‘Knowing God’, where we shall consider the significance of the various names of God (e.g. Adonai, Jehovah Nissi and El-Elyon), as well as some of His attributes such as the immutability of His Will, and His impartiality. Rev. Seet will deliver the opening message on 14th May, titled ‘Elohim’. This series is interspersed with workshops covering topics that are on the hearts and minds of our young people, such as ‘The Covenant Home’, ‘Spiritual Leadership’ and ‘What to do While I’m Single?’ These titles reflect the growing desire of the YFers to conform every aspect of their lives to the biblical example, by translating theology into practice.
Of course, though it might be hardly evident by the tone of this article thus far, the YF has its light-hearted moments too. We recently had our version of ‘The Amazing Race’ where YFers had a memorable time as they were sent to various malls to complete fun, though tedious tasks, as a cell-group. This year, we will continue to have the occasional CG Day, where each cell-group will decide on an activity to participate in together, such as cycling, or having a picnic, and Games Day, where the various cell-groups will compete against each other in games with a biblical lesson. It is our ardent prayer and desire that the YFers will develop strong Christian friendships which God will use for their sanctification in the present, and in the years that lie ahead.
On 12th March, the YF had a session of tracting in the vicinity of Yishun MRT station. There, many YFers got the opportunity to stand up for their faith, and be willing to suffer scorn and ridicule from members of the public as they attempted to hand out tracts. Thankfully, we did not face overwhelming persecution, though we did realise how challenging, yet incredibly fulfilling, the work of evangelism is, as the majority of passers-by rejected our offer of a tract. Certainly, in 2011, we will continue to explore ways in which the YFers can proclaim the Gospel, particularly to their friends in school, NS or the workplace.
Finally, it is important for the YFers to see themselves as part of the larger body of Christ, and thus, we are always keen on having joint events with other fellowship groups within Life Church, or even in those BP churches with whom we have developed extensive ties. In 2010, the YF joined the LTF for a video screening session on the inspiring life of John Wesley, and also went to Chinese Garden with the YAF for a time of kite-making (and trying our best to get those kites airborne). On 28th May, the young people from other BP churches will come down to join us and the LTF in Beulah House, where we shall have the 2011 Combined BP Seminar. Also, we look forward to joining hands with the YAF and LF for a Mothers’ Day special event on 7th May. We pray that the YFers will grow spiritually through these opportunities as we learn from and serve our fellow-brethren.
We would like to warmly invite all young people, from the ages of 17 to 24, to join us for our weekly meetings at level 4, Beulah Centre, at 3pm on Saturdays.
