Sunday School - Junior Department

“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night;” 2 Peter 3:10a.

Such verses in the Bible often warn us, remind us and also give comfort to many in the church who are born again, who are looking toward anxiously for an end to the sufferings of this world when Christ our Bridegroom comes to us. However, it is also a double-edged sword that cuts both ways; it is good news for Christians, born-again believers, washed by the precious blood of Christ and bound for heaven, tremendously bad for the ones that Christ will say, “I never knew you: Depart from me,  ye that work iniquity.” Matthew 7:23b.

Then, we turn to our children and look into their eyes. Which of the two sides will each of our children be? The born again or the forever lost?

The parallels with our time are obvious enough, however different the circumstances centuries ago and now. There are always the sheep and the goats. Does my child know Christ personally or is my child really just having the ‘going-to-the-church’ religion- if even that – devoid of personal commitment to the Jesus Christ of the Bible, missing out on the covenant relationship we adult born-again believers have. Did not each of us promise when we were saved and when we presented our children to the Lord for baptism, to bring up the child in the knowledge and fear of the Lord?

Hence, the greatest challenge and burden all the teachers feel in the Junior department that caters for primary 3 to primary 6 children is really showing how real Christ should be to the children.

The question is how different would your children take life’s challenges if they knew God personally, were born-again and also have been familiar with God’s word, i.e., God’s instruction for every part of their lives?

Whilst Christian education and leading a child to Christ is chiefly the parents’ duty, the Sunday school is the next complementary means to supplement your efforts to lead your child to Christ.

For 2008, our teachers have been burdened with teaching from a new series from the Great Commission Publication, the covenant relationship between God and the children of Israel, Christ and the Church, Saviour and sinner, Jesus and your child. We will also be covering the Westminster Shorter Catechism (WSC) so that every child that goes through the Juniors Department will know the WSC.

Hence, we at the Sunday school sincerely urge you to please not allow exams, CCAs and many other activities that may deter your children from coming to Sunday school, if you understand the importance of Christian education can play a big part in the your child’s journey of finding Christ, of Christian education, instruction to face the challenges of worldly influences in school, bad company and bad values.

In addition, if Christ burdens you, please also invite your neighbours or close friends who have children from primary 3 to 6 to attend our Sunday school.  “How then shall they call on Him whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?” Romans 10:14
