Text: Hebrews 11:20-22
I. Trusting in God’s Overruling Grace (v.20)
a. God confirmed with Isaac that He would bless him (Gen 26:3,4).
b. Isaac tried to go against God’s plan (Gen 25:23) by trying to bless Esau instead of Jacob.
c. He submitted to God’s overruling grace (Gen 27:33)
II. Trusting in God’s Perfect Will (v.21)
a. Being a supplanter was a metaphor for Jacob’s life.
b. Jacob obeyed God's will by placing his right hand on the head of Joseph's younger son, Ephraim, instead of on his older son, Manasseh. (Gen 48:13,14)
c. Jacob worshipped while leaning on the top of his staff — a symbol of his journey of faith — which he had used for walking ever since God touched his hip and caused him to limp. (Gen 32:30-31).
III. Trusting in God’s Unfailing Promises (v.22)
a. Joseph never lost faith in God’s promises.
b. He commanded his bones to be taken back to the Promised Land (Gen 50:24-25)
c. His unshakeable faith in God’s promises that He would move his family back to the Promised Land.
Reflection Questions:
1. Am I trusting God to work out His plans in His way for my future, or am I still trying to control outcomes in my life or family?
2. Is my hope rooted in the promises of God — or in the comforts and successes of this world?
3. What legacy of faith am I leaving for the next generation?
