Text: Hebrews 13:1-3
I. Continue Your Brotherly Love (v.1)
a. The church that loses its brotherly love will suffer.
b. The mark of true discipleship is to love one another (Jn. 13:34-35; 15:9).
c. Brotherly love—philadelphia—speaks of a deep, sincere and active affection for brethren in Christ (cf. Rom. 12:9-10)
d. To continue in brotherly love is a command. It is rooted in God’s unconditional love (agape).
II. Forget Not Your Hospitality (v.2)
a. Entertain strangers or Hospitality (cf. Rom 12:13) is love for strangers--philoxenia opposite of fear of strangers—xenophobia. Hospitality is an outflow of brotherly love.
b. Hospitality is not merely having a meal but reaching out to a someone even a visitor of our church.
c. God Himself loves the strangers (Lev. 19:3; Deut. 10:18-19)
d. Entertaining angels unaware (cf. Gen. 18-19)—any stranger could turn out to be God's messenger.
III. Sympathy with Sufferers (v.3)
a. Love reaches the hurting and forgotten and enters into another’s suffering especially those in prison for the faith—as bound with them.
b. Jesus identifies with the suffering of His people (cf. Acts 9:4; Matt. 25:35-40)
c. Any adversity our brethren face, we may one day face. We weep with them that weep. (Rom. 12:15b).
Reflection Questions:
1. How can I deepen by brotherly love within the church.
2. How can I intentionally practice hospitality in the coming week—both within the church family and toward strangers God brings across my path?
3. Whom is God calling me to remember—the suffering, the lonely, the discouraged, the overlooked? Is there a person whose burden I can help carry?
We thank God that Lifers are very generous in their offerings towards missions. In terms of support, the church gives priority to our fully-supported missionaries and we would like you to be aligned with the church’s position when giving towards missions. Rather than giving offerings that are designated to specific individuals or mission stations, you are encouraged to give to the Missions Fund and let the Missions Committee disburse them as it sees fit. Your understanding on this will facilitate an informed stewardship of resources for the Lord’s work in missions. If you wish to contribute financially to missionaries, please indicate "DO Missions" in the reference field in your e-Offering via the Life Church PayNow QR Code. May the Lord bless your cheerful giving.
