Renewing Our Strength in the Lord:
Contentment with God
Life B-P Church Worship Service, 14th December 2025
Text: Hebrews 13:5,6

  • The early Jewish believers faced hardship, rejection, and persecution for following Christ. In the midst of their losses, the temptation to find security in riches was strong. The writer exhorts them to guard their hearts against covetousness and to find contentment in God.
  • Covetousness is subtle and destructive, yet often the least confessed sin. It feeds the illusion that “more” will make us happy. True contentment is not found in what we possess, but in Whom we possess - Christ Himself.

1.    Contentment Begins in the Heart (v5a)

  • Guard against Covetousness. Covetousness is the excessive desire for more - the love of money (Luke 12:15). Scripture warns that “the love of money is the root of all evil” (1 Timothy 6:10), and that covetousness is idolatry (Colossians 3:5). It replaces trust in God with trust in possessions.
  • Rest in God’s Provision. True contentment says: “I have enough, for God has provided enough.” Where the world says “Get more,” God says, “Trust Me” (1 Timothy 6:6–8).
  • Contentment Is a Heart Posture. Sin comes from within (Mark 7:21–22). The issue is not how much we possess, but what possesses our heart. Riches cannot satisfy (Ecclesiastes 5:10) and discontentment reveals more about the heart than our circumstances (Proverbs 4:23).

2.    Contentment is Found in Christ (v5b)

  • Christ’s Presence is the Reason for Contentment. God does not say, “Be content because you have enough,” but “Be content because I am with you.” The Greek uses a fivefold negative for emphasis: “I will never, never leave you; I will never, never, never forsake you.” Circumstances may change but God never does (Hebrews 13:8).
  • Faith Trusts His Promise, Not Circumstances. Faith believes God even when circumstances do not align with our desires. Contentment does not ignore circumstances - but it refuses to be controlled by them.
  • Christ Alone Truly Satisfies. Contentment is not better circumstances -it is deeper confidence in Christ. Paul learned that Christ’s grace is “sufficient” (2 Corinthians 12:9). “The LORD is my Shepherd; I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1) - not because we have much, but because we have Him. Contentment is found not in what we hold, but in Who holds us.

3.   Contentment is Learned through Trusting Christ (v6)

  • We can live Boldly because of His Promise. “So that” - because God will never leave nor forsake us, we can live with boldness. This boldness is not self-confidence but confidence in God (Rom 8:31).
  • The LORD Himself is our Helper (Psalm 118:6).
    -    A Personal Helper - “The LORD is MY Helper.”
    -    An Almighty Helper - “The LORD is my HELPER” - the Maker of heaven & earth (Psalm 121:1-2).
    -    An Ever-Present Helper - “The LORD IS my Helper” - “a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).
  • We have the Strength to be Content. Contentment is not automatic; it is learned (Philippians 4:11–13) - learned through trials, practiced daily, strengthened by Christ. The believer CAN be content because the LORD is his Helper.

Questions for Discussion

  1. Reflect on whether your heart is marked more by gratitude or comparison. In what areas do you find it hardest to say, “I have enough”?
  2. When facing pressure or uncertainty, do you rely first on your own resources or on God’s promises? How does His assurance, “I will never leave thee,” shape your response?
  3. Recall specific “Ebenezer” moments - times God provided or helped you. How can these strengthen your faith and contentment today?

Offering for Missions

We thank God that Lifers are very generous in their offerings towards missions. In terms of support, the church gives priority to our fully-supported missionaries and we would like you to be aligned with the church’s position when giving towards missions. Rather than giving offerings that are designated to specific individuals or mission stations, you are encouraged to give to the Missions Fund and let the Missions Committee disburse them as it sees fit. Your understanding on this will facilitate an informed stewardship of resources for the Lord’s work in missions. If you wish to contribute financially to missionaries, please indicate "DO Missions" in the reference field in your e-Offering via the Life Church PayNow QR Code. May the Lord bless your cheerful giving.
