Text: 1 Peter 1:6-9

I.    Joy is Rooted in Christ, Not in Circumstances (v.6) 
a.    Joy flows from salvation
b.    “Wherein ye greatly rejoice” — joy anchored in:

  • New birth in Christ
  • God’s electing grace
  • A living hope
  • An eternal inheritance

c.    Trials brings heaviness but for a season and for our necessity.

II.    Joy Because Faith is Refined Through Trials (v.7) 
a.     God uses trials to test our faith like fire refines gold.
b.     Faith is more precious than gold for the latter perishes.
c.     Purpose of testing is to the praise, honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ

III.    Joy is Sustained by a Relationship with Christ (v.8,9) 
a.     Christ is no less real although He is unseen.
b.     Believers love Christ though they have not seen Him
c.     A relationship with Jesus sustains our joy that is unspeakable and full of glory even amidst trials.
d.   The goal of faith is our present assurance of salvation and the future bodily resurrection of believers when Jesus comes again.
e.     We rejoice greatly not because trials are pleasant but because Jesus whom we believe is precious.

Reflection Questions:
1.  How does viewing your trials as “for a season” and “if need be” change your current perspective on them? 
2.  In what ways has God used recent “fire” to refine the gold of your faith? 
3.  What practical steps can you take to refocus on the unseen Christ when trials come your way? 

Offering for Missions
