Reflecting Christ, Redeeming the Time
What is Precious to You?
Life B-P Church Worship Service, 1st March 2026
Text: 1 Peter 2:7,8

  • Many people regard financial stability, health, leisure, friends and family, and good work-life balance as precious to them.
  • At the deepest level, people regard a sense of self-worth as precious. Finding our worth in Christ: We are precious when Christ is precious.
  • Besides being the Living Stone (v.4) and the Chief Corner Stone (v.6) Christ is also the Head Stone (v.7; Cf. Zechariah 4:7).

There are at least three reasons why nothing should ever be more precious to us than Christ:

  1.    Christ is precious regardless of all opinions about Him. (v.7)
“…the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner.”
    • The Rejection: Ancient builders might reject a stone for perceived flaws; similarly, the religious authorities of Israel rejected Jesus because He didn't fit their plans.
    • The Vindication: God vindicated Jesus by raising Him from the dead and making Him the Head Stone.
    • Futile Opinions: Many opinions have been expressed about Christ, but none can change the truth that He is the beloved Son of God. (Cf. Psalm 118:22,23; Matthew 21:42-44)

  2. Christ will cause the downfall of all who reject Him. (v.8a)
“…a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient.”
    • The Warning: Those who stumble at the Word and are disobedient face judgment.
    • The Stumbling Stone: Rejection causes self-inflicted pain. But for some, like Saul of Tarsus, this leads to repentance.
    • The Rock of Offence: Persistent pride and disobedience lead to fatal ruin. Christ’s power can bring down even the greatest worldly empires. (Cf. Daniel 2:31-35)

  3. Christ will win despite all efforts to oppose Him. (v.8b)
    “…whereunto also they were appointed.”
    • God’s Sovereignty: Their rejection of Christ will not bring them any help or success. God can make use of their rejection to accomplish His own purposes. (Cf. Acts 4:26-28; Psalm 76:10)
    • Our Comfort: Even the most wicked efforts of men will be used to fulfill His purpose without negating their own accountability.
    • Our Response: One must either believe in Christ for eternal life or reject Him for eternal death. There is no neutral ground.

Diagnostic Questions – How to know whether Christ is most precious to you:

  • Is Christ more precious to you than everything this world can offer? (Cf. John 21:15; Matthew 10:37)
  • Do you give Christ your best or your leftovers? (Cf. Mark 14:3-9; John 12:1-11)
  • Are you fully surrendered to Christ and determined to do only His will? (Cf. Galatians 2:20)

Questions for Personal Reflection:

  1. Where do you truly find your self-worth on a daily basis?
  2. Is your life currently aligned with Christ as your Chief Corner Stone?
  3. Have you become addicted to pride without knowing it?

Offering for Missions

We thank God that Lifers are very generous in their offerings towards missions. In terms of support, the church gives priority to our fully-supported missionaries and we would like you to be aligned with the church’s position when giving towards missions. Rather than giving offerings that are designated to specific individuals or mission stations, you are encouraged to give to the Missions Fund and let the Missions Committee disburse them as it sees fit. Your understanding on this will facilitate an informed stewardship of resources for the Lord’s work in missions. If you wish to contribute financially to missionaries, please indicate "DO Missions" in the reference field in your e-Offering via the Life Church PayNow QR Code. May the Lord bless your cheerful giving.
