Reflecting Christ, Redeeming the Time
Humble Yourself
Life B-P Church Worship Service, 5th July 2026
Text: 1 Peter 5:5-7

  • Humility is not an inborn trait. By nature, all humans are self-seeking and self-promoting.
  • It is a character trait that must be actively learned and cultivated through the study of God’s Word.
  • There are three reasons why you should humble yourself:

1.    Humble Submission Facilitates Pastoral Oversight (v.5a)

  • The Greek term hupotasso is a military term emphasizing voluntary cooperation and alignment with authority rather than forced subjugation.
  • Church members (referred to as “younger” in rank/office) are called to submit to the leadership of the Elders.
  • Church members must exercise humility even when they are older or more experienced than their leaders.
  • Mutual humility between the leadership and the congregation builds a united and healthy church family.
  • However, submission is not required if leaders abuse authority or compel actions contrary to God’s Word.

2.    Humble Service to One Another is Pleasing to God (v.5b)

  • To be “clothed with humility” means putting on the garb of a servant, ready to render lowly work for others.
  • Jesus demonstrated ultimate humility by washing the disciples’ feet, setting a standard for all followers. (John 13:3-15)
  • The Obstacle of Pride:
    • God strongly opposes the proud because pride is essentially self-worship and a violation of the first commandment. (Cf. Proverbs 16:5; 6:16-19; 16:18; Exodus 20:3)
    • Spiritual Pride: A “silent killer” that makes individuals think that they know everything, that they are right all the time, and that they deserve more than others. (Cf. Luke 18:9-14)
    • Consequences: Spiritual pride leads to stagnation, distorted views of God, and eventual destruction. (Cf. 1 Corinthians 10:12)

3.    Humble Surrender Brings God’s Timely Help (vv,6,7)

  • To humble oneself under God’s mighty hand is to accept that we are nothing and can do nothing without Him.
  • God promises to exalt the humble in due time, replacing their mourning and heaviness with joy and praise. (Cf. Isaiah 61:3)
  • Salvation requires a humble admission of sinfulness and a complete surrender to Jesus Christ.
  • Casting all your cares upon Him:
    • Humble surrender involves throwing the weight of your worries onto God.
    • Worry is often driven by pride—the false belief that you can control the future.
    • Casting your care upon God is achieved through prayer, resulting in a peace that passes understanding. (Philippians 4:6)

Conclusion

  • You should humble yourself because it facilitates pastoral oversight, it is pleasing to God, and it brings His timely help.
  • The ultimate motivation is the example of Jesus, who cared enough to humble Himself unto death on the cross for our salvation. (Philippians 2:8)

Questions for Personal Reflection:
1. Do you see submission to Church Elders as a voluntary, organized alignment with God’s plan, or do you view it as forced submission?
2. Are you prepared to perform lowly, perhaps even “dirty” work for others, or do you secretly feel that some tasks are beneath you?
3. When you stand before God, do you truly accept that you have nothing, are nothing, and can do nothing without His mercy?
4. Are you holding onto anxiety because you are trying to control a future that only God can control?

Offering for Missions

We thank God that Lifers are very generous in their offerings towards missions. In terms of support, the church gives priority to our fully-supported missionaries and we would like you to be aligned with the church’s position when giving towards missions. Rather than giving offerings that are designated to specific individuals or mission stations, you are encouraged to give to the Missions Fund and let the Missions Committee disburse them as it sees fit. Your understanding on this will facilitate an informed stewardship of resources for the Lord’s work in missions. If you wish to contribute financially to missionaries, please indicate "DO Missions" in the reference field in your e-Offering via the Life Church PayNow QR Code. May the Lord bless your cheerful giving.
