Text: 1 Peter 5:8-9

I.    Know Your Spiritual Opponent (v. 8)

1. He is a personal adversary: “your adversary”
2. He is called the devil: slanderer
3. He is a murderer and father of lies (John 8:44)
4. He is roaring lion, a restless destroyer.
5. He transforms himself into an angel of light
6. He is a defeated enemy by Christ

II.    Be Operationally Ready (vv. 8, 9a)

1. Be sober (clear-headed, self-controlled)
2. Be vigilant-watchful, alert, on guard.
3. Resist steadfastly in the faith

III.    Not Standing Alone in Overcoming (v.9b)

1. Satan’s lie: You are alone in your struggles and sufferings
2. The purpose in affliction: God uses these active battles to refine, prove, and strengthen our faith.
3. The final victory (Rev. 20:20).

Questions

1. As you reflect on the spiritual battles you face, where in your life do you sense a need to become more spiritually alert and vigilant against the enemy's schemes?
2. When you give in to temptation, how do you discern the difference between Satan's influence and your own personal responsibility? How does Scripture shape your understanding of this?
3. Think of a time when you felt that no one truly understood what you were going through. How does the Bible encourage you to respond in those moments, and what truths can you hold on to?
