Reflecting Christ, Redeeming the Time
Beware of False Teachers
Life B-P Church Worship Service, 4th October 2026
Text: 2 Peter 2:1-3

1.    Their Existence Among God’s People
“But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you…” (v.1a)

  • Insider Threats: Dangers arise from within (“among you”) by exploiting misplaced trust rather than attacking from outside.
  • Scriptural Examples: Seen in Old Testament false prophets who preached peace over repentance (Jer. 5:26,31; 23:16–17), Simon the Sorcerer (Acts 8:9-24), and Paul’s warnings regarding Hymenaeus, Philetus, and Alexander (1 Tim. 1:19-20; 2 Tim. 2:17-18).
  • Modern Relevance & Defence: Cults continue to lead believers astray today; churches must appoint leaders based strictly on sound doctrine and proven Christlike character.

2.   Their Extensive Influence
“…who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.” (vv.1b,2)

  • Destructive Influences: The words ‘damnable, destruction and pernicious’ (all from the same word, apōleia) signify eternal ruin and complete destruction.
    • Theological Corruption: Privily introducing damnable heresies by twisting Scriptures out of context.
    • Defiant Rebellion: Denying Christ's authority, demanding unquestioned compliance, and usurping control over believers.
    • Infectious Subversion: Building movements (e.g. Gnosticism) that corrupt Christian living and bring ridicule upon the Gospel.

3.   Their Exploiting Work
“And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you…” (v.3a)

  • Selfish Motives: Fleecing the flock to finance opulent, self-serving lifestyles.
  • Scammer Tactics: Using fabricated words and offering attractive promises of material prosperity, entertainment, and guaranteed wellness.
  • Satanic Origin: Deceitful lies that originate from the Devil (John 8:44), foreshadowing the deception of the End-Time Antichrist (1 Tim. 4:1,2; 2 Thes. 2:9,10).

4.   Their Expected End
“…whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.” (v.3b)

  • Unavoidable Divine Judgment: Their judgment is active and non-slumbering; God will surely hold them accountable.
  • Ultimate Destiny: They share the exact fate of Satan, the Beast, and the False Prophet in eternal torment (Rev. 19:20, 20:10; 21:8).
  • Uplifting Comfort for Believers: This assures the grieving Christians that divine justice will prevail over deceitful leaders.

A Final Thought:

  • Stand Firm on Christ! Spiritual immunity is maintained by keeping Jesus Christ central and standing firmly on His truth alone.

Questions for Personal Reflection:

  1. When choosing leaders, teachers, or digital content to follow, do you evaluate them strictly by their solid biblical doctrine and Christlike character, or are you easily swayed by their charm, eloquence, and popularity?
  2. Do you lean toward messages that promise ease, prosperity, or wellness, or do you humbly welcome biblical truths that call for repentance and spiritual growth?
  3. Is Jesus Christ the sole foundation of your faith, or have you allowed a human leader, ministry, or movement to become more central in your life than Him?

Offering for Missions

We thank God that Lifers are very generous in their offerings towards missions. In terms of support, the church gives priority to our fully-supported missionaries and we would like you to be aligned with the church’s position when giving towards missions. Rather than giving offerings that are designated to specific individuals or mission stations, you are encouraged to give to the Missions Fund and let the Missions Committee disburse them as it sees fit. Your understanding on this will facilitate an informed stewardship of resources for the Lord’s work in missions. If you wish to contribute financially to missionaries, please indicate "DO Missions" in the reference field in your e-Offering via the Life Church PayNow QR Code. May the Lord bless your cheerful giving.
