Reflecting Christ, Redeeming the Time
The Depths of Spiritual Depravity
Life B-P Church Worship Service, 1st November 2026
Text: 2 Peter 2:10-16

• Peter wrote this second epistle to fortify the church urgently against the false teachers emerging in their midst.
• He now provides the grounds for the severe punishment they will receive on the day of judgment (v.9b).

1.    Spiritual Depravity Unmasked
a.     Self-Promotion (v.10a)

• False teachers resent legitimate authority. Under the guise of doing God’s will they pursue fleshly desires, causing much damage.
• Historical Example: Hong Xiuquan claimed to be Jesus' younger brother, weaponising Scripture to spark the Taiping Rebellion (1850–1864) and causing over 20 million deaths.

b.     Slanderous Accusation (vv.10b–12)

• False teachers arrogantly slander angelic dignities and spiritual powers beyond their understanding (cf. Ephesians 6:12).
• Biblical Contrast: Even Michael the archangel did not bring a slanderous accusation against Satan, saying only, “The Lord rebuke thee” (Jude 9).
• Those who mock evil spirits today fall into the same error
  (cf. Acts 19:14).

c.    Selfish Gratification (v.13)

• While claiming to be spiritual guides, false teachers are driven by the pursuit of pleasure, revelling in broad daylight like animals.
• God sees them as deceptive spots and blemishes that are unhealthy to the church, and must be removed (cf. 3:14).

d.     Seductive Manipulation (v.14a)

• While appearing as good shepherds, false teachers prey on spiritually immature souls to satisfy sexual lust and greed.
• Modern Example: Televangelist Oral Roberts used fear and manipulative tactics, including a 1987 ultimatum demanding US$8 million.

e.     Sinful Ambition (vv.14b–16)

• False teachers follow the path of Balaam, who “loved the wages of unrighteousness” and abused his spiritual standing for financial gain (cf. Numbers 22:1-35).
• As Balaam brought God’s curse upon himself for causing Israel to sin against Him, false teachers are called “cursed children” for leading believers into moral ruin.

Personal Application: Sober Reflection

• Self-Examination: Believers must evaluate themselves, recognizing that all humans share in sinful tendencies toward self-promotion, slander, pleasure-seeking, and covetousness.
• Total Depravity: Sin pervasively affects every part of human nature—mind, emotions, appetites, and will (cf. Romans 1:32).
• Call to Confession: Honest confession before God brings merciful forgiveness and cleansing (cf. 1 John 1:8,9).

2.    Spiritual Depravity Subdued

• Necessity of Divine Intervention: Human strength cannot overcome depravity, as illustrated by God intervening through Balaam's donkey (v.16).
• Victory Through the Holy Spirit: Believers must walk in the Spirit and yield to His Word to mortify fleshly desires day by day (cf. Galatians 5:16; 2 Peter 1:4).

Questions for Personal Reflection:

1. Examining Hidden Motives: In what subtle ways do I manifest self-promotion, unbridled speech (such as hasty or critical comments on social media), or a pursuit of selfish gratification in my daily routine?
2. Recognizing Our Depravity and the Need for Confession: In what ways do I see sin affecting my mind, emotions, appetites, or will? Am I coming clean before God in honest confession rather than comparing myself to others?
3. Yielding to the Holy Spirit: In what area of my life am I attempting to resist temptation through my own human effort rather than yielding to the Holy Spirit's guidance and the Word of God to subdue fleshly desires?
