The Promise of True Rest

Life B-P Church Worship Services I & II

22nd June 2025

Text: Matthew 11:28-30

Introduction

This sermon focuses on Jesus Christ’s promise of true rest for the soul. This is one of the Bible’s deepest and most life-changing promises, going beyond physical healing or financial blessing to offer spiritual rest. The central question addressed is: “How can the Lord Jesus give rest to your soul?” The essence is that Jesus offers genuine rest that surpasses what any human religion or philosophy can provide.

1. Jesus Can Give Rest Because of His Father’s Authority

Jesus’s authority to make this promise comes through three aspects:

  • Christ reveals in the Father: Jesus exists in the eternal Trinity and shares the Father’s divine nature
  • Christ reveals the Father: As the express image of God, Jesus provides the complete revelation of who God is
  • Christ reconciles sinners to the Father: Serving as the mediator of the covenant of grace, Jesus channels all of God’s blessings to humanity

Matt. 11:27. “No man knoweth the Son but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save [except] the Son.” All our knowledge about God comes to us through the life and ministry of the Son.

2. Jesus Gives Soul Rest Through His Gentle Nature

Using the metaphor of taking Jesus’s yoke, it explains that following Christ means:

  • Coming under His gospel work and strength
  • Aligning with God’s purposes and will
  • Complete submission to Christ’s reign

The contrasts between two masters:

  • Satan: Described as a destroyer who takes everything and impoverishes lives
  • Jesus: Characterised as having an easy yoke and light burden, being “meek and lowly in heart”

This is notably the only time in the Gospels where Jesus describes His own heart, emphasising His tender care for souls.

3. Jesus Gives Rest Through His Unconditional Invitation

It highlights the gracious nature of Christ’s invitation in verse 28:

“Come all” - The invitation is universal

“Come with your burdens” - People are invited to bring:

  • Fears about life and death
  • Personal failures
  • Heartaches
  • Sins
  • Weariness

“Come as you are” - No prerequisite of self-improvement is required; people can come confessing their sins and guilt

The Freedom Christ Offers

The details of what Jesus frees believers from:

  • Alarms of conscience
  • Terrors of the law
  • Fear of death through eternal life
  • Judgment day

Conclusion

The preacher is challenging listeners burdened by sin, failure, and guilt to respond to this invitation. He encourages them to personalise the text, make it their prayer, and experience the life-changing peace and rest that Christ offers.

Christianity is presented not as a burdensome religion but as true rest for the soul, emphasising that the Christian life, far from being difficult, offers the best life both in this world and the world to come.

Offering for Missions

We thank God that Lifers are very generous in their offerings towards missions. In terms of support, the church gives priority to our fully-supported missionaries and we would like you to be aligned with the church’s position when giving towards missions. Rather than giving offerings that are designated to specific individuals or mission stations, you are encouraged to give to the Missions Fund and let the Missions Committee disburse them as it sees fit. Your understanding on this will facilitate an informed stewardship of resources for the Lord’s work in missions. If you wish to contribute financially to missionaries, please indicate "DO Missions" in the reference field in your e-Offering via the Life Church PayNow QR Code. May the Lord bless your cheerful giving.
