Renewing Our Strength in the Lord:
The Perfecting Sacrifice
Life B-P Church Worship Service, 20th July 2025
Text: Hebrews 10:1-18
I. Introduction
Our God is the one only and living true God who is perfect, lacking nothing and possesses every divine attribute in fullness and harmony. He is most wise and works all things according to the counsel of His own immutable and most righteous will, for His own glory. Only a perfect God can provide a perfect sacrifice.
II. Imperfect Old Testament Sacrifices
Why are they imperfect? The repeated sacrifices offered by the priests year after year were imperfect because:
- They could never make the comers or offerors of sacrifices perfect (v1).
- There was still conscience of sins (v2).
- There was remembrance again made of sins every year (v3).
- It was not possible that the blood of animal sacrifices should take away sins (v4).
III. Christ’s Perfect Sacrifice
In contrast to the Old Testament sacrifices, Christ’s sacrifice was far more superior and efÏcacious as
- It was a sinless body prepared by God to atone for our sins (v5).
- It was a sacrifice that is well-pleasing to God (v6, 8).
- It was a willing sacrifice (v7).
- It was a singular sacrifice that replaced all the imperfect OT sacrifices (v9).
- It was a once-for-all perfect sacrifice that enables us to stand righteous before God (vv10-14).
IV. Good Things
In the fullness of time, God sent His Son to redeem us out of our bondage of sin that we might be sons of God. He gave us total forgiveness and free access to God. There is no more guilt of sins, He remembers our sins and iniquities no more and we stand righteous before God. Christ descended to save us and ascended to intercede for us. He gave us His indwelling Holy Spirit to aid us in our sojourn on earth. His Word is written upon our heart that all may know Him that He is our God and we are His people (Heb 10:15-18). When He comes, we shall reign with Him (2 Timothy 2:12). O what blessed good things He has bestowed on us!
V. Conclusion
Christ’s singular once-for-all sacrifice totally removes our sins, past, present and future. As animal sacrifices have ceased, let us offer Him our continual praises, lifelong service and cheerful giving which are an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, well pleasing to God.
Discussion Questions
1. If the Old Testament sacrifices could not provide total forgiveness, why did God institute that system for 1,500 years?
2. What does Christ’s once-for-all sacrifice mean to you?
3. What offerings and sacrifices can we offer to God today?
We thank God that Lifers are very generous in their offerings towards missions. In terms of support, the church gives priority to our fully-supported missionaries and we would like you to be aligned with the church’s position when giving towards missions. Rather than giving offerings that are designated to specific individuals or mission stations, you are encouraged to give to the Missions Fund and let the Missions Committee disburse them as it sees fit. Your understanding on this will facilitate an informed stewardship of resources for the Lord’s work in missions. If you wish to contribute financially to missionaries, please indicate "DO Missions" in the reference field in your e-Offering via the Life Church PayNow QR Code. May the Lord bless your cheerful giving.
