Building up the Church of Christ:

My Saviour Beckons Me

Life B-P Church Worship Service, 7th May 2023

Text: Acts 8:26-40

  • The time when the early church was most helpless and weak became its strongest and most glorious moment.
  • Nothing could stop the believers from witnessing for Christ:

⃝ The Lord allowed them to be persecuted in order to move them out of Jerusalem to Judea and Samaria. (v.4)

⃝ Satan attempted to destroy them from without and also from within. (Acts 8:9-24, cf. Matthew 13:24-30)

  • We must be ready to serve whenever and wherever our Saviour beckons us, no matter what circumstances we are in.

1.  Be Ready to Go Wherever the Holy Spirit Leads

  • Philip went to Samaria to seek refuge from persecution.
  • But he made use of his time there to tell the Samaritans about Christ.

Application:

Whenever circumstances bring you to a new place of work or residence find out how the Lord wants to use you there.

  • Philip obeyed the directions he received from God. (vv.26,29)
  • His journey to Gaza led to an opportunity to witness to a high-ranking official from Ethiopia.
  • Then he was transported to Azotus to fulfil another task. (v.39,40)
  • He settled down at Caesarea where his house became a lodging place for itinerant preachers and missionaries. (21:8)

Application:

Constantly seek the Lord’s will, going wherever He wants you to go, and doing whatever He wants you to do.

2.  Be Ready to Share the Gospel with Others

  • Philip was ready to share the message at any time. (cf. 1 Peter 3:15)
  • Basic points in the message:

1.  Accept everything that the Bible says about Jesus Christ and yourself as true.

2.  Confess to Jesus that you are a sinner in need of His salvation.

3.  Commit your life to Him once and for all.

Application:

We must overcome our fear or weariness of witnessing to others by being excited about the message we share.

  • Philip never seemed to get tired of preaching the same message.
  • He was ready to witness whether to many people or to only one person. (vv.5,35)
  • He used a question to lead the Ethiopian official into the Gospel.

Application:

Find a transition point to steer the course of your conversations in the direction of salvation. Look for opportunities to share the Gospel.

3.  Be Ready to Help Those who Respond with Faith

  • The ultimate objective of Philip’s preaching was to bring forth a response of faith. (vv.12,36)
  • His objective was reached because the Lord had prepared the hearts of these people to commit their lives to Christ.
  • Note:

⃝ Sometimes people respond to the Gospel with hostility, or with ridicule, or with a false conversion.

⃝ Our responsibility is to sow the seed and leave the results to God.

⃝ Success is not measured by the number of souls we win to Christ, but by how we use our opportunities to share the Gospel.

Questions for Reflection:

1.  How can you discern God’s will for you in your present situation in life?

2.  Who are the persons you have contact with who need the Gospel?

3.  What can you do to prepare the ground well for sowing?
