Christ, the Anchor of Our Soul (I)
Renewing Our Strength in the Lord:
Christ, the Anchor of Our Soul
Life B-P Church Worship Service, 4th May 2025
Text: Hebrews 6:9-20
- The writer of Hebrews had just given his readers a strong warning against falling away. (6:4-6)
- But his purpose was to encourage them to examine themselves to ensure that they are truly saved.
- There are three things that can help to strengthen our assurance of salvation.
1. The Characteristics of a Transformed Life (vv.9-12)
“…things that accompany salvation”
- Diligence: “…your work and labour of love” (rather than slothfulness)
- Faith and patient endurance (e.g. Abraham, v.15)
Question: How has your life been transformed since you began trusting in Jesus for salvation?
2. The Certainty of God’s Promises to Us (vv.13-18)
- God made a promise to Abraham and bound Himself with an oath to keep it.
- We become heirs of this promise through Jesus Christ. (v.17)
- Therefore, we who have fled to Him for refuge have a strong consolation.
Question: Have you fled to Jesus for refuge from God’s wrath against your sins?
3. The Constant Ministry of Our High Priest (vv.19-20)
- Jesus Christ is our sure and stedfast hope, like an anchor of the soul.
- He has entered into God’s presence as our forerunner. This guarantees our entrance as well.
- He intercedes for us as our great high priest forever.
Question: Have you made Jesus the anchor of your soul?
Conclusion:
All that we need to strengthen our assurance of salvation is found in Jesus:
- His life, death and resurrection provide the basis of all the promises of God to us.
- He works in us to transform our lives into His image.
- He prays for us to be delivered from sin and to be glorified with Him.
Questions for Personal Reflection:
1. How does knowing these truths help you to live in times of uncertainty?
2. How should the promises of God impact your daily life and decisions?
3. What are some ways to prioritise your spiritual growth and maturity?
