Confidence

I was very inspired by the unpacking of Zechariah 4:1-7 last LORD’s Day (10th March 2024). The message “Not by might, nor by power” had a great impact on me. After the verse-by-verse unpacking of the paragraph, I not only had a better understanding of the 4th vision of GOD, I also had a clear understanding of the context of GOD’s message to Zerubbabel.

This better understanding of the context of the vision gave me an application that will change the way I live and pray. I walked away knowing how I should apply these words of GOD in my “going out and coming in” in life and ministry.

Maybe you can have a similar application as me?

In Life and Ministry

These words of GOD in Zechariah 4:6 to Zerubbabel was to be confident that he will accomplish all that the LORD of hosts required of him. GOD will do that by His Spirit - this was my first take away.

You will remember that Zerubbabel had before him a badly demolished and abandoned temple to rebuild and a discouraged people that was called to do the rebuilding. The exiles who returned were a small group of people with limited resources of might and power. But GOD told them the work would still be completed because He will do it by His Spirit.

GOD will bring His people to worship Him in Jerusalem again. GOD’s people will return to the Promised Land, no matter the obstacles, objections and oppression. GOD will accomplish this impossible feat by His Spirit.

The people in and around the Promised Land will see that the LORD of hosts is their GOD again and they are His people with a new temple.

In life and in prayer, we must pray with the same confidence that comes from knowing that GOD will accomplish His will and purpose. GOD will accomplish what He has set out to do in our life and ministry.

For our church, nothing will stop GOD from bringing His elect in Christ into our church to worship Him. We will be a family of GOD, called to be set apart and serve Him until Christ returns.

We learn to have this confidence in GOD who will accomplish His will and good pleasure. Let us be found growing in faith and be faithful in life and ministry.

In Prayer

The other application is about our prayer life.

Be it our private and/or corporate prayer life, we can have great confidence in the LORD of hosts who will act according to His Spirit.

Let us not just have the confidence that GOD will accomplish His will and good pleasure in us. Let us have confidence in our prayer and be found faithful in prayer too.

We need this confidence in prayer because there are times when GOD does not answer according to our supplication or petition. I am sure that you might have been affected when a dear and important petition your made had been denied by GOD. You may even have come across others who got discouraged or even left the Christian faith because GOD did not give what they asked of Him.

In the matter of prayer, Zechariah 4:1-7 is about GOD being sovereign, wise and good. That He will keep His Word and only act according to His character. Our confidence to keep praying and be faithful in prayer must be founded on the fact that He will not deny nor act out of character. GOD will act according to His Spirit and we will be in good hands whatever His answer to our prayers may be.

So, I will take this opportunity to announce on behalf of the pastoral team that we will be having an on-site church prayer meeting. We will start this prayer meeting on Sunday, 7th April, which is three weeks from now. This prayer meeting will not replace but supplement our virtual prayer meeting on Tuesday night and it will be held every first Sunday of the month at 5pm in Beulah centre room 2-1.

Will you come on a Sunday evening with confidence in GOD, to pray with and for one another? Will we consider coming together as a church to pray for the work that GOD has given to us?

Prayer is hard work. It requires intentional effort and setting aside of our time. Our prayer life, be it private or cooperate is a discipline. Our Tuesday night prayer meeting is a great spiritual discipline and it is over 70 years old. As we compare this new prayer meeting to the existing one, perhaps we wonder whether this new initiative will last just as long and until Christ returns. We do not know, but let us hope that it will be done and sustained by the Spirit of GOD who has called us to pray. “Pray without ceasing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17)

Conclusion

All of us want to have great confidence in GOD in life and ministry. After hearing last Sunday’s sermon, we know that this is possible because our confidence in GOD is never be misplaced.

Our response to Zechariah 4:1-7, as reminded by Elder Ng Beng Kiong is to work diligently and to depend on the LORD to bring everything to pass according to His Spirit.

We were reminded last Sunday that the returnees were a small group. They did not have much resources and they had enemies from within and without. Likewise, whatever the obstacles before us to trust and obey GOD may be, GOD will help us to grow in the grace and the knowledge of Jesus Christ according to His Spirit. “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:13)

Indeed, anything we achieve for Him in life and ministry, is only possible because of His Spirit.

From our Church camp speaker:

Truth Matters; but as Pontus Pilate once asked in vexed perplexity, “What is truth?” (Jn 18:38).

God Himself asserts, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked” (Jer 17:9); but do we realise just how sly and cunning our hearts are within us?

In my short time in Gospel ministry, I have been stunned by how often it is precisely those who know the truth who are living a lie. It seems so illogical, so unreasonable. But Christ warned in another context: for some who consider themselves “children of the kingdom … there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Mt 8:12).

It is seldom an intellectual error that leads us into moral wickedness – it is almost always fleshly lust. Proverbs 1:7 plainly says, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge”. Yet, so many who profess (or even preach) Christ are content to go about their daily lives without the slightest fear of God, but will stubbornly insist that they are rich in knowledge of God.

To be rooted in truth, one must live in obedience to the truth one already knows. Our Master said, “For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.” (Mt 25:29).

I did not write this to get you to sign up for this year’s church camp. I write to urge you to come to camp broken and contrite, fearfully and prayerfully. And do be in earnest prayer for yourself, for your brethren, and (if you would be so kind) for the speaker.
