Senior Fellowship

Golden Age Fellowship (GAF) has changed its name to Senior Fellowship (SF) in July last year.  As much as we treasure the former name for all these years, we felt that it is time for a change of name to align our desire that this fellowship caters to not just the elderly seniors but those younger seniors who are in their 50s.

Moreover, in June 2023, we have pastor Quek coming on board to lead the Seniors’ Ministry. Seniors Fellowship Exco together with the brethren who are involved in engaging seniors who are not in fellowship groups will work together as one under the umbrella of Seniors’ Ministry to reach out to the seniors in our church.

With the change of name to SF, comes with a change of logo. A sister helped us to create a new logo in line with SF’s Bible verse taken from Psalm 92:14 “They shall bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat flourishing.” The logo features a harmonious arrangement of vibrant fruits and lush vines which depicts every senior in our church is to be fruitful, united and growing in the Lord.

We have a variety of activities catered to our seniors. Every 2nd Saturday of the month, Dr Mark Lim will teach us from God’s Word. On Wednesdays we have short devotions, singspiration, exercises, board games followed by lunch. We also have our quarterly Saturday meetings where we gather to sing, pray, listen to God’s Word and followed by a scrumptious dinner.  Seminars on dental health, hearing issues and scams were also organized last year for the seniors.

We have our outdoor activities too. In 2023, we went to Woodlands Waterfront, St John’s Island, Mandai Bird Paradise, Yakult Factory at Woodlands and Heritage Trail walks at Potong Pasir, Joo Chiat, Little India and Chinatown.

Joo Chiat Heritage Walk

We were delighted when the teens from Lively Teens Fellowship organized a National Day celebration in August  and a Christmas celebration cum caroling in December. There were messages, testimonies by the seniors, skits by the teens and a time of games and getting to know one another.

We thank God for all these opportunities for fellowship and growth in the Lord Jesus Christ, we pray that 2024 will be another meaningful and blessed year for us to taste of His goodness and love for us. We thank God that we are able to find mutual support and encouragement as a church. Truly, blest be the tie that binds (a hymn which we presented at the Evening of Praise on 7 October 2023).

We welcome you to join us!

3 Imperatives for SF Members

(1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

The apostle Paul wrote this epistle or letter to the Thessalonian Christians from Corinth in about 50 AD after his first visit to Thessalonica, the capital of Macedonia. It was written to encourage and edify young believers in the faith. They were going through trouble and persecution because of their new found faith in Christ. They were given three imperatives to follow. These three imperatives can also be applied to SF members and all Christians.

1. Be Joyful evermore

Be always joyful, at all times, regardless of circumstances (Philippians

4:4) Joy is one of the graces of the Holy Spirit the Source & Subject of Joy. (Gal 5:22-23; Rom 14:17). Christian joy is not temporal, not external; it is internal and abiding. The joy of the world is temporal, external and fluctuating. It is based on circumstances.

Why Be Joyful Always? Because

  • We are a redeemed people, redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus. (1 Pet 1:18-19; Rev 5:9)
  • Our names are written in heaven, in the book of life. (Luke 10:20; see also Phil 4:3; Rev 21:27)
  • The LORD is our Shepherd. (Ps 23:1; Jn 10:11,14, 27-28)
  • We have the blessed hope (1 Thess 4:13-18; Titus 2:13; Rom 5:2-5)
  • We have the indwelling Holy Spirit. (Rom 8:9; 1 Cor 3;16)
  • We are serving the King of kings and the Lord of lords. (1 Tim 6:15; see also Rev 17:14; Rom 14:17)
  • We have the blessed hope. (1 Thess 4:13-18; Titus 2:13; Rom. 5:2-5)
  • We have the indwelling Holy Spirit. (Rom 9; 1 Cor 3:16)
  • We are serving the King of kings and the Lord of lords. (1 Tim 6:15; see also Rev 17:14; Rom14:17)

2. Pray Without Ceasing

It is to be in an attitude of prayer to keep on praying, on all occasions;

never to give up; to be persistent and consistent in praying. (Lk.18:1; Eph 6:18; Col 4:2; 1 Pet 4:7)

What is Prayer?

Prayer is “a communication between God and us whereby we expound to Him our desires, our joys, our sighs, in a word, all the thoughts of our hearts.”

Prayer is God’s ordained way of communicating with Him the thoughts of our hearts (John Calvin). God moves, acts, and responds to prayer. (Matt 7:7; see also Jn 16:24; Jer 33:3)

Prayer is “heaven’s greatest weapon. One-half of our calling as ministers and elders is prayer (Acts 6:4), but in reality we spend no more than 5 percent of our time in prayer...” (Joel R. Beeke)

All Christians are called to pray (Col. 4:2). Is anything more essential, yet more neglected, among us than prayer?” (Joel R. Beeke)

“Prayer...moves the hand that moves the world.” (J.A. Wallace)

Life’s Application

Are you in continual communion with God? Are you conscious of God’s presence with you throughout each day?

The Apostle Paul was a great Intercessor

Paul prayed for His Co-workers and His Flock. “I thank God... that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day.” (2 Tim 1:3; Rom 1:8-9; 1 Cor 1:4; Eph 1:16; Phil 1:3-4; Col 1:3; 1 Thess 1:2-3; Phil 4).

3. Give Thanks In Everything

“Giving thanks always in all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Eph 5:20; see also Phi 4:6; Heb13:15)

Thank God for His presence, peace and power. In Christ there is victory as we face trials and testing of life. (Jn 16:33; Phil 4:13)

Life’s Application.

As Christians, we should always be thankful in everything. (Eph 5:4,20; Col 2:7; 3:15-17; 4:2)

Is your life a life of thankfulness and gratefulness? “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” (Col 3:17; see also 1 Cor 10:31; Eph 5:20) “It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD…” (Ps 2:1)

You ought always to give thanks because “this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” (1 Thess 5:18)

The will of God is always good, and acceptable and perfect. (Rom 12:2)

“To know the will of God is the greatest knowledge. To do the will of God is the greatest achievement.” (George Truett)

Conclusion

What is the will of God for SF members?

  • Rejoice evermore
  • Pray without ceasing
  • Give thanks in everything

Make these 3 Imperatives your daily habit

  • Always be joyful
  • Always be prayerful
  • Always be thankful
