HAVE YOU REAFFIRMED YOUR FAITH?

We thank God that at our Easter Baptismal Service held on the 31 April 2024, eleven brethren entered into the membership of our church. Of these eleven brethren, there were two who reaffirmed their faith. However, the number for reaffirmation of faith could have been more because our church records show that there are some who have been baptized as infants but have not reaffirmed their faith yet.

What is reaffirmation?

It is, as the word suggests, for those who were baptized as infants to take the step of faith in Christ to publicly reaffirm and declare their belief and faith in Jesus alone. The act of reaffirming of faith – like baptism – does not save. Therefore, we differ from the Roman Catholic rite of confirmation which – as one of their seven sacraments – saves. Moreover, the Roman Catholic church believes that the rite of confirmation comes with the Holy Spirit bestowing His spiritual gifts through the bishop’s anointing of oil.

Why is reaffirmation required for a person who is baptized as an infant?

First, it reaffirms God’s covenant with the person established in infant baptism (cf. Genesis 17:7,8; Acts 2:39).  Second, it is a moment of recognition of the work of God’s grace in the life of the person, to celebrate and acknowledge that they are bought with a price – the precious blood of Christ (1 Corinthians 6:20, 7:23). Third, they are not just members of the universal (invisible) church but also communicant members of the local (visible) Church. The Church, through her leaders, confirms the reality of God’s saving work in this person who reaffirms their faith and formally welcomes them into the redeemed family of God. Thus, they enter more fully into the responsibilities and privileges of membership in the Church. They will effectively use their spiritual gifts to serve God and to build up the church. Last but not least, it solidifies their desire and dedication to the Lord to live a life of love, obedience and commitment to follow Jesus.

What is the right age for a person to be reaffirmed?

In our Church constitution, article 7.2 states, “Baptized infants upon coming of age in that they can satisfy the Board of Elders as to their faith shall be received into communicant membership by reaffirmation of faith.” What does “coming of age” mean?  Our church takes the cue from the Jews’ practice of bar mitzvah whereby boys who are 12 years of the age are considered as coming of age.  A bar mitzvah is a Jewish coming-of-age ceremony for boys that marks their religious adulthood on their 13th birthday. The term bar mitzvah literally means son of the commandment. During the ceremony, the boy is given the religious responsibilities and duties of an adult man, and is now responsible for his own actions and can decide for himself how he would like to practice Judaism. In the 20th century, this ceremony was extended to girls, and was called the bat mitzvah which means daughter of the commandment. If you are 12 years old and above, a born-again believer and were baptized as an infant you should not tarry but take the step of faith to reaffirm your faith in Christ.

What are our concerns as parents, pastors and Elders if you were baptized as an infant but have yet to reaffirm your faith even though you are of age and perhaps already in your twenties or thirties or older?

The first concern is your salvation. As mentioned above, infant baptism (and believer’s baptism) does not save. If you are thinking that since you are born into a Christian family or have grown up in church, you are saved, you are deceiving yourself. Salvation is by the grace of God as only He can save you from your sin. You have to repent and turn to Him for forgiveness and be saved from His wrath against you so that you may not perish in eternal death but have everlasting life (cf. John 3:16). Therefore, you have to examine your faith (2 Corinthians 13:5).

The next concern is that although you are saved, as long as you have not reaffirmed your faith you are still a non-communicant member of the church. Hence, you are not allowed to partake of the Lord’s Supper. This fencing of the Lord’s Supper is to prevent those who have not declared their faith in Christ publicly through reaffirmation or believer’s baptism (for those who have not been baptized as an infant) to firstly, eat the bread or drink the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner and be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord (1 Corinthians 11:27). In addition, fencing the Lord’s Supper is a way to protect the Lord's table from being put to open shame when people partake of it in foolishness and rebellion. Therefore, if you are a genuine born-again Christian and were baptized but have not reaffirmed your faith, you will forfeit this spiritual blessing of partaking the Lord’s Supper that would nourish your soul and strengthen your faith in Christ. Jesus commands us to take the Lord’s Supper as often as we can (1 Corinthians 11:25).

What should you do?

Take the step of faith to reaffirm your faith if you have been baptized as an infant and have put your trust in Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. I urge you to register for the catechism class that will commence on 14 July 2024 by emailing to the church office at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to be ready for your reaffirmation at our church’s 74th Anniversary in October.
